Social Worker’s take on Holistic Health
In anything we do, we must consider many different variables. For instance, I enjoy gardening. I can't look at gardening as just putting seeds in the ground, and in a month or two, I'll have fresh fruits and vegetables. I have to consider my environment, the soil, pests, access to sunlight, the types of plants that thrive in this zone, and the list goes on.
When I think of mental health, it only makes sense that we look at the individual as a whole person: the environment, support system, access to services, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. The unique aspect of taking a holistic approach to therapy or healing is that it should also be tailored to support the needs of the individual and where they are on their journey. The use of different forms of art therapy, meditation, and yoga practices, as well as mindfulness, can be used. These approaches have something imperative in common. That is the use of physical movement and self in order to cope with or manage mental health as well as to help identify triggers.
When we have different avenues to support us along this journey for a healthier self, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually – we become more equipped to manage life stressors and bring awareness to a greater version of ourselves.
